Folios: PLACES

Abstracting the Land

Like the painter Cy Twombly whose work blurs the line between drawing and painting, these abstract landscape photos by David D. Livingston have a scratchy quality that blurs the line between photography and painting.

Degrees of abstraction are present in all of Livingston’s fine art photography; here the levels leave only a suggestion of the actual place. The photos taken here are from Jackson Hole, Kauai, Hawaii, London and Paris.

PLACE: Silver Lake, California

The ongoing series, PLACES show the plein-air explorations of unique spots in nature. The first within the series Silver Lake, these are also the very first fine art photos Livingston created.

The crystalline Silver Lake hangs on a large granite bench in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Buried under feet of snow during the winter, come summer pine scented days, crisp nights and vitality takes to the air.

Here in these photographs the alpine lake reflects the stark blue of a summer’s sky, the vibrant streak of quaking Aspens and at dusk the faint suggestions of a rower on darkening waters.

PLACE: Jackson Hole

The story of Jackson Hole began over ten million years ago as the valley floor uplifted and then dropped creating the dramatic Teton Range which acts like a fence along the broad mountain plateau.
The mix of wide open spaces and teeth like mountain peaks has drawn visitors to Jackson Hole for over a hundred years
. Far on the southern end of the valley and nestled against a pine mountain is the National Elk Refuge. Before the harsh alpine winters set in, thousands of elk descend here to find protection from the deep snow and driving winds of higher elevations as they will forage food until spring.

These photographs taken at dusk late in the summer season show not the peaks of Jackson but the expanse and openness of the west.
